About Peter

My life’s been built around telling the stories of everyday people doing extraordinary things,  fighting against the odds and standing tall when all around is in turmoil.

I’ve been a reporter all my working life since leaving school at 17 years old.

I started out as a newspaper reporter and then as a reporter for the ABC in Hobart.

Over the years I worked as a reporter for Federal Parliament, as a foreign correspondent and as an ABC Four Corners reporter and producer.

This job makes you look beneath the surface, to investigate and question and to ask why things are the way they are. I believe my job has always been to hold powerful institutions, politicians and influential individuals to account.

I have witnessed politics from the inside as a reporter and I was on the steps of Parliament House when PM Gough Whitlam was sacked, sparking the nation’s biggest Constitutional crisis.

I’ve peered behind the cloak of secrecy that surrounds the decisions made that affect our way of life in Tasmania and seen how weak politicians bow to big donors, big corporates, influential insiders, the dictates of factional bosses and multinationals with no stake in our state or our futures.

I’m driven by my love of Tasmania and the promise of what it could be with proper funding and integrity.

These are passions and skills that I think will serve the community well as an Independent voice standing up and fighting for what we need in Franklin.
